This week local MP and green energy champion Afzal Khan visited our newest site, the Divine Mercy RC Primary in Moss Side, Manchester.
Mr Khan met with the school’s eco warriors to hear about the actions they’re taking to make the site more sustainable such as their on-site composting system for lunchtime food waste. After that we took Mr Khan onto the roof to see the new solar panels in situ.

Afzal Khan MP said:
“It was great to visit Divine Mercy today and see the new community-owned solar panels on the roof of the school. I hope that more schools in Manchester can benefit from clean, green solar energy in the future”
Since coming online in November 2025, the solar panels at Divine Mercy have already generated over 35,000 kWh of clean, green energy.
What’s more, the local community is already benefiting from the project, with a local food aid group successfully applying to the GMCR Community Fund to get their own solar panels on their community building in Moss Side
Clare Campbell, School Headteacher said:
“It was a pleasure to welcome Afzal Khan MP to our school today to see the new solar panels on our site. Our pupils explained how they have been learning about renewable energy using the on-site panels as an example of what a green future looks like.”
Although this is GMCR’s 13th solar project, it is the first in the city of Manchester. We hope to see more schools in the area benefit from clean, green community-owned energy.
Tudor Baker, GMCR Director said:
“Hearing the wonderful things that the Eco Warriors are doing to improve the environment at Divine Mercy was heart warming. We’re very proud to have helped get community-owned solar panels on the school in Moss Side and hope to see more like them in the city.”
